Based on Bomb Jack Extra Sugar for the Amstrad CPC.

This new port does not contain all of the extra features and game modes of Extra Sugar (which I'm not sure many people bothered with to be honest) but rather is a straightforward port of the arcade game which makes use of the Amstrad Plus features, namely extra colours and hardware sprites.

Gameplay is ported directly from Extra Sugar with some small tweaks to bring the difficulty closer to the arcade game.

The game will work on any Amstrad Plus computer or GX4000 console.  Recommended for use with the Pico-GX cartridge.

Featuring:
* Arcade-faithful gameplay at 50hz
* Dozens of sprites and up to 50 colours on screen at once
* Persistent high scores when used with ACE-DL emulator or Pico-GX cartridge

Note that in order to use the save feature in ACE-DL, make sure you have the latest version of the emulator, and that "Pico-GX save mechanism" is enabled in the plugin manager.  File saving is automatic when running from the Pico-GX cart.

Coded using RASM assembler and ACE-DL by Roudoudou, Arkos Tracker by Targhan, and ZX0 data compression by Einar Saukas.

This is an AMAZING port, all but arcade perfect and perhaps displacing Pang and Donkey Kong as the best-ever coin-op ports on Amstrad hardware, but under emulation (on a Raspberry Pi here) there's a consistent glitch with bombs being in the wrong place, eg see the top left quadrant in this pic. They generally reset to the right place when you collect one in the same group, and it doesn't seem to affect Round 3 or Round 5. Bomb Jack Extra Sugar did not have this problem on the same system, so hopefully it can be fixed.

It's because the bombs are multiplexed hardware sprites and the timing is very precise. I only had four sprites free so when there are more than four bombs on a line the game is moving sprites left and right at the exact moment to appear like more than four.

Whatever emulator this is must not have completely accurate timing, which is a pity. I recommend using ACE-DL. I can't fix it because it's the emulator which has the problem. On real hardware the timing is correct.  Please take it up with the emulator author - maybe they could use this as a benchmark...?

very good

Sorry for the delay, was waiting on Saberman's video :) - All done Bomb Jack GX - If you loved this Arcade classic back in the day, then check out this new Amstrad Plus and GX4000 version! https://www.indieretronews.com/2026/06/bomb-jack-gx-if-you-loved-this-arcade.html

I kind of wish you did keep all the extra features and game modes, playing with invincibility was great lol

If there is demand I could always consider a complete Extra Sugar version later. It just would not have been ready yet if I had.

Nice game!

Great game, thanks.

Excellent !!! Witch emulator is the best to run this game ? I would like to use it with my Android smartphone and also a Raspberry Pie connected to my TV. Thx

I recommend ACE-DL because it supports the save function and it's the one I used to write the game. I've not tried running it on a Raspberry Pi... but apparently it can?

Excellent that you've created a page here! I hope you continue creating more CPC games, hehe! Cheers!
